December 5, 2012 volcano activity
KVERT suggests vents are becoming more localized along eruptive fissures at Plosky Tolbachik in recent days. Heightening of the eruptive column is one indication of this (now rising to 4 km height asl).

The ongoing earthquake swarm beneath the Coso Volcanic Field (CA) continues in full swing with a magnitude M3.1 event and 13 earthquakes between M1.0 and M3.0 overnight. The swarm began on 27 November and has included earthquakes as strong as M3.7. The volcanic field is comprised of numerous young rhyolite domes and basaltic lava flows and cinder cones and is believed to be related to a metamorphic core complex at depth. Eruptions may have occurred within the field within the last 12,000 years and low velocity bodies (active magma chambers) have been detected by geophysical methods beneath the rhyolite dome cluster. A geothermal plant extracts heat produced by the intrusions. Seismic swarm activity is common at Coso and some researchers have suggested that particularly robust swarm activity within the field may be utilized as a short-term (weeks to months) indicator of forthcoming large tectonic earthquakes in southern California.
Exhalations of gas and ash at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico) continue at a reduced pace (averaging one per two hours) today.
Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) (station PCG) is perking with frequent, small low-frequency earthquakes.
Numerous low-frequency (volcanic) earthquakes have merged into tremor at San Miguel volcano (El Salvador) (station VSM) during the past 24 hours.
Something’s up in Nicaragua. Periods of volcanic tremor again appear on seismograms at San Cristobal (station CRIN) and Concepcion (station CONN), and pulses of volcanic earthquakes occurred at Cerro Negro (for the second straight day!) (station CNGN) and Momotombo (station MOMN) volcanoes overnight. Volcanic tremor continues at Masaya volcano (station MASN) as well.
Volcanic tremor and explosion earthquakes rattle Reventador volcano (Ecuador) again today.
Small local earthquakes are apparent on seismograms at Tongariro volcano (New Zealand). Wind noise masks low level volcanic tremor and small earthquakes at nearby Ruapehu volcano, and White Island volcano trembles with continuous, relatively strong volcanic tremor.
Relatively weak SO2-enriched plumes waft from Popocateptl volcano and Santa Maria (Guatemala) volcanoes in recent satellite imagery.
