Russia hopes for end of visas with EU after 2008
Luxembourg. Feb 28 (Interfax) - Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said
Russia hopes to abolish all visa regulations with the European Union
"within a short period of time after 2008."
"Our final objective is for abolition of visas, which I think will
be reached if not in 2008, as [former European Commission President]
Romano Prodi promised, then within a short period of time after the end
of 2008," Lavrov told a news conference after a meeting with
representatives of the EU "Troika" in Luxembourg on Monday.
Both Russia and the EU favor a step-by-step visa abolition process,
he said.
"The first stage could see the introduction of simplified visa
regulations by signing agreements between Russia, Germany, Italy and
France," the minister said.
A readmission agreement is crucial to abolishing visas, he said.
"We are committed to searching for solutions to all these issues
that would suit both Russia and the EU," Lavrov said.
