Latvian city permits procession commemorating SS legion
RIGA. Feb 23 (Interfax/BNS) - The city council in Liepaja, Latvia
on Wednesday gave permission to the Union of National Forces to hold a
street procession on March 16 in memory of the Latvian Waffen SS legion.
Viktors Birze, the union's co-chairman, told BNS that the route was
agreed upon with the local self-government and only slightly differs
from the original.
"I am satisfied that the city council did not give in to the
blackmail from left-wing political parties - the Latvian National
Democratic Party, and the association For Human Rights in Unified
Latvia," he said.
Earlier, the left-wing associations, the Russian community and
local veterans' organizations spoke out against the planned procession
and said they intended to organize a protest if it were permitted. They
said they could not rule out the possibility that there might be
bloodshed at such a protest.
The Latvian Waffen SS legion was set up in February 1943 and, on
March 16, 1944, fought against the Soviet army on the Velikaya River.
In February 2004, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement
reminding Latvia that, during the Nuremberg trial, the activities of the
Waffen SS legion in Latvia had been declared criminal. The Foreign
Ministry stressed that "it is impossible to single out any part of the
SS that was not involved in criminal activities."
